I have put together a quick turotial on how you can custimize an icon to meet the layout as well as the coloring scheme without impacting the resolution of the image.

Especially for small icons, follow the steps

1. Download the icon in the PNG format and open in Photoshop. Magnify the image using the zoom tool (View -> Zoon In or Ctrl ++)

   

2. Convert the image into Black and White (Image -> Adjustments -> or Alt+Shift+Ctrl+B)

   

3. Invert the Colors (Image -> Adjustments -> Invert or Ctrl I)

   

4. Adjust the levels until the unwanted part of the Image are no longer visible (Image -> Adjustments -> Level or Ctrl+L)

   

5. Choose a color that matches you criteria and apply the Gradient Map (Image -> Adjustments -> Gradient Map)

   

6. You can now crop the image to your specifications and use the icon.
